Leen Pfrommer (1935) is een van de invloedrijkste schaatscoaches die ons land ooit gekend heeft. Onder leiding van de kleine man met zijn karakteristieke oranje puntmuts domineerde Nederland in de jaren '70 voor het eerst de internationale schaatssport. Ard Schenk, Harm Kuipers en Piet Kleine werden wereldkampioen allround. Het waren de jaren dat miljoenen Nederlanders, invulschema's in de aanslag, aan de buis gekluisterd zaten tijdens Europese- en wereldkampioenschappen. Vanaf 1984 begeleidde Pfrommer elf jaar lang talenten van Jong Oranje, onder wie de latere wereldkampioenen Falko Zandstra, Ids Postma en Rintje Ritsma. Later trainde hij de opleidingssprintploeg, waar Jan Bos, Erben Wennemars en Marianne Timmer hun doorbraak beleefden. Pfrommer stond erom bekend dat hij zijn pupillen keihard liet trainen, met voor die tijd revolutionaire trainingsmethodes. Leen Pfrommer heeft daarmee een cruciale rol gespeeld in de ontwikkeling tot leidende schaatsnatie die ons land nog altijd is. Eelco Hiltermann (1982) studeerde journalistiek. Hij werkte bij persbureau Dow Jones Nieuwsdienst en RTL Z. Sinds begin 2017 is hij verslaggever bij RTL Nieuws. Gijs Hiltermann (1952) is auteur van verschillende boeken over bedrijfskunde en financieel management. Tevens is hij eigenaar van Uitgeverij H&G. In het begin van de jaren '70 werkte hij samen met Leen Pfrommer.

Als er dingen gebeuren op het werk of ergens anders, waar je het niet mee eens bent, kun je je soms heel kwaad maken. Maar daar krijg je weinig vrienden mee. Je kan ook zielig in een hoekje gaan zitten mokken. Maar dat schiet ook niet op. Ik heb gemerkt dat je er ook vaak de humor van in kan zien en schreef daar dan een liedje over. Zo ben ik cabaret gaan schrijven en heb een keer of zeven mijn collega's laten lachen om wat er fout kan gaan. Ik werkte gedurende 40 jaar als dierenverzorger in Diergaarde Blijdorp en dat is leuk, daar viel heel wat te lachen. Daarnaast heb ik als hobby muziek maken. Vanaf mijn 10de jaar gitaar en toen ik 18 was erfde ik de contrabas van mijn vader en daar speel ik ook graag op. Maar om de liedjes, die soms spontaan bij mij opkomen te begeleiden, zing ik die bij mijn gitaar. Soms schrijf ik iets wat niet te zingen is, dan blijft het een gedichtje. In dit boek zit een verzameling van mijn creaties. Ik dank hierbij de uitgever… zo blijven mijn liedjes misschien wel langer bestaan als ikzelf. Niec van der Burgh
