Ondertussen duurt in Syrië de oorlog voort. Herdenken is belangrijk omdat herinneren noodzakelijk is om niet te vergeten tot wat de mens in staat is als hij onder druk komt te staan. De onverdraagzaamheid en radicalisering nemen zienderogen toe. Machthebbers vinden geen oplossing voor de vele religieuze, etnische en andere conflicten. Onruststokers en dictators, met honger naar macht en bezit, zaaien haat en verdeeldheid tot bevolkingsgroepen de wapens tegen elkaar opnemen. Miljoenen mannen, vrouwen en kinderen vluchten weg uit de vele brandhaarden, verblijven in vluchtelingenkampen of maken met gammele bootjes de oversteek naar veiliger oorden. Die zogenaamde 'veilige landen' weten geen raad meer met de grote toevloed van mensen die hun land ontvluchten. In een dorp in het Hageland beleeft Ferdinand, een jongen van twaalf jaar, de vooravond van de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Thuis en met zijn vrienden beleeft hij verrassende dingen. Er komen veel mensen bij hem thuis. Zijn moeder heeft een kruidenierswinkel en zijn vader is koster. Uit gewoonte komt iedere week een aantal buren luisteren naar de koster die de krant voorleest. Op een dag hoort Ferdinand dat zijn naamgenoot, de Aartshertog van Oostenrijk en zijn vrouw Sophie in Serajevo zijn vermoord. Het is 28 juni 1914... Ina Stabergh (Berthy Stas) debuteerde in 1981 met de novelle Aan de horizon. Sindsdien publiceerde zij talrijke bundels poëzie, proza en ook toneel. Poëtisch werk werd getoonzet en meermaals uitgevoerd. In 2006 werd zij als Eerste Stadsdichter van Diest aangesteld en in 2008 als Eerste Hagelanddichter. Zonder vensters de treinen, een boek voor volwassenen over de beide Wereldoorlogen, schreef zij samen met haar man. Het verscheen in 2013 bij Uitgeverij Calbona onder Stabergh & Jonckers. Ferdinand - Een kind in de oorlog is haar 33ste publicatie.
