Middelpunt is Wouter, de zoon van een boerenfamilie uit het dorp Heeraartswaarde. Heeraartswaarde, in de volksmond Aernswaert genoemd, was een van de dertien dorpen die met de zeer zware storm van 18 op 19 november 1421 ten onder gingen in de vruchtbare 'Groote Waert'. Twaalf Dorpen zijn onder water gebleven. Van lieverlee verzonken de dorpen door de afzet van rivier- en zeeklei en werden aan het zicht ontrokken. Eén dorp komt later bij nieuwe inpolderingen weer boven water. De nieuwe naam voor Heeraartswaarde wordt Hank. Voorafgaande aan de vloed, krijgt de lezer een kijkje in het harde plattelandsleven uit die tijd van een klein dorp in de Groote Waert dat eigendom was van de heren van Dussen. Besmettelijke ziekten, mislukte oogsten en het voortdurende gevecht tegen en met het water dat als een rode draad door het boek loopt. Met als hoogtepunt de beschrijving van de nagt van Sinte Elisabeth en zijn verschrikkelijke gevolgen. U krijgt een uniek van uur tot uur ooggetuigenverslag. Bijna 600 jaar na die nacht van 18 op 19 november 1421 spreekt de St. Elisabethsvloed nog steeds tot de verbeelding van velen. Bij alle geschiedenislessen op scholen is deze ramp wel eens besproken. Leef mee met het leven van Wouter en zijn familie. Juist op de dag dat boerenzoon Wouter zijn, door haar vader uitgehuwelijkte geliefde, veilig op de polder van Aernswaert heeft afgezet breekt de hel los. Op 18 november 1421 worden zoveel natuurkrachten gebundeld dat het onmogelijk wordt voor hem zijn dorp nog via de Maes te bereiken. Wanhopig grijpt hij zich vast aan de Raai (de grenspaal die midden in de Maes stond) maar ook deze moet hij loslaten. Met kracht wordt hij de Maes opgedreven richting Heusden. Wouter beland veilig in Waalwijck en wordt liefdevol opgevangen. De drang om terug te keren naar zijn geboortedorp wordt echter te groot en na veel omzwervingen komt hij in Geertruidenberghe terecht. Vanaf hier onderneemt hij tochten naar het overstroomde gebied. Wouter gaat in Munsterkerck wonen waar hij zijn bestaan weer opbouwt. Maar altijd blijft bij hem dat ene verlangen: Aernswaert moet opnieuw ingepolderd worden. Zijn verdere leven wordt hierdoor beheerst. Een verhaal over leven met en doorheen tegenslagen, maar vooral over overleven.
